Humanisten blij met uitspraken Obama op National Prayer Breakfast
Op 4 februari 2010 organiseerde Barack Obama een National Prayer Breakfast. Daar erkende hij de steun van niet-gelovigen aan de slachtoffers van de ramp in Haïti: "The compassion and decency of the American people is expressed… by Americans of every faith, and no faith, uniting around a common purpose, a higher purpose". "By including us in his acknowledgement of the overwhelming and amazing response to the Haitian catastrophe, President Obama echoed what we have claimed all along, that one can be good without God," stelde Roy Speckhardt, coördiantor van de American Humanist Association.Bovendien maakte Obama van deze bijeenkomst gebruik om de Oegandese wet tegen holebi's te veroordelen. De wet, een voorstel van het Ugandees parlementslid David Bahati, wil van homoseksualiteit een zwaar misdrijf maken in Uganda. "We may disagree about gay marriage, but surely we can agree that it is unconscionable to target gays and lesbians for who they are [with] odious laws that are being proposed most recently in Uganda", aldus Obama.
